Personalized medicine
- the drugs of the future?

Thursday the 23th of April, 2015, 14.00-16.45

Benzon Auditorium, University of Copenhagen, Universitetsparken 2, 2100 København Ø

Personalised medicine is this decade´s hot topic in drug development. The option of personalised medicine is present for treatments where genetic profiling makes it possible to tailor the treatment to specific sub-groups of patients. This way, the overall treatment outcome may be improved by means of diagnostic tools, e.g. within cancer diseases with various genetic variants. Development of personalized medicine is complex as it involves integration of a diagnostic test (companion diagnostic) in the development of the drug.

This seminar will provide an overview of the various development concepts for personalized medicine with a clear focus on so-called drug-diagnostic pairs, including the regulatory framework, challenges & opportunities for such programs, from where we are today to how this might look like in the future. A case story of the development and challenges of Herceptin and its companion diagnostic will be presented including its impact on the treatment guidelines for breast cancer.

Treatment of diseases in the central nervous system (CNS) suffers from ineffective therapies. The importance of personalised approaches within CNS diseases will be elucidated including the challenges both from a science- and treatment perspective, with a short case story.
